How to make a video resume

A recent LinkedIn survey of nearly 2,000 adult job seekers in the United States found that 62% of them believe that sharing more about themselves in a video will help them get a job. More than half will be eager to share videos about themselves and their goals with hiring managers.  


What is a Video CV?

A resume is a primary aid in everyone’s career. A video resume is a short clip of a self profile recorded by a candidate applying for a job. 

The candidate shares this video file with the employer over electronic media, such as email; through a video hosting site, such as YouTube; or on the candidate’s webpage. Many times the video CV supplements traditional CVs when applying.

A  video resume is a digital presentation that adds appeal to a job application by highlighting the potential employee’s background and eligibility for the desired job.  


Video resumes, Visumés, or simply Video CVs were recorded and distributed via VHS tape during the 1980s. However, due to the lack of electronic media, this practice was not prevalent. 

This trend emerged in 2000 after the Internet entered the digital world. Over time, the use of webcams and YouTube made it easier to create video CVs. 

Nowadays, many tools and freeware are readily available to anyone to use. Even specialized platforms like Spark Haier are available to use for video resumes.


Importance of Video CV

A video resume briefly describes your qualifications, experience, and interests in a digital format to the hiring manager. Opting for a video CV shows your creativity and awareness of technological trends. Therefore, a video resume helps convey your personality and makes you feel virtually introduced to the recipient. 

Hiring managers prefer video version resumes over traditional paper CVs sent via mail. Watching and listening to video resumes is the most effective way to weigh candidates for shortlisting. You can best judge candidates in customer-facing roles, such as sales, marketing, media, and PR and communications through video resumes.

The video resume provides several merits to one’s career.

  • Make you feel special: You exhibit that you are ready to go the extra mile using this application method.
  • Video CV adds creativity: Traditional CV templates restrict innovation after a point. That is not the case with a video CV. 
  • Video resume builds personality: It is difficult to express your personality accurately in a written CV or cover letter. Video enables you to make a memorable impression.
  • Video CV helps sell your skills: You can show off skills like public speaking, communication, and IT / digital skills by creating videos. You can also show your portfolio work.
  • Video resume talks about your suitability: On a self-controlled recorded version of a resume, you can conveniently debate your candidacy with valid justifications and examples.  

How to Prepare a Video Resume? 

The process is quite different from Resume Writing. 

You can capture your professional video introduction briefing “about me” on your website. However, when applying for a job, it is advised to shoot a customized resume rather than a generic video resume in the public domain.

Before the shooting, do some research into the domain, past revenues, products, and marketplace. This approach will help you to keep your capabilities aligned with their requirements.

Video CV alone does not suffice the standard application process of an organization. Instead, it acts as an additional gradient in the application process. 

For creating a video CV, you need to finish the storytelling first.

The setup need not be studio-like infrastructure. You can rather use the webcam connected to your desktop or record on a hand-held video camera. This method is simple as most social media professionals, including YouTubers, stream the self-narrated briefs.

The Process

  1. Script: 

The principal activity is to pen your script, rehearse, and time it.  The script is a blueprint to scope your briefing in CV. Your speech should flow naturally in a decent accent without any overacting on-record. The first 7 to 8 seconds should bind the listener.

  1. Dry Run:

Focus on the gist of the script. Memorize and practice it in front of the mirror, if required. Once the scope fits in the time needed, you should not give attention to the timer on successive rehearsals.

  1. Setup: 

When you are ready with the script and have confidently practiced it, you can record it. But before that, check your setup.

Inspect if your camera is functioning well. Keep the background and light conditions suitable to capture video. 

Keep the camera/webcam positioned to cover your torso. Use a tripod for the standalone camera. 

When you fix your position for the proper frame, restrict your physical movements. Also, keep the microphone in the correct place to capture the speech. Make sure to test your audio and video quality beforehand.

  1. Record: 

After the setup and ambient lighting are ready, start recording. Don’t obsess with your watch during the recording, as you already had the script fitted in the time slot. Reshoot the same if you encounter any glitch or are interrupted by unexpected hurdles.

  1. Edit: 

You should edit your video resume to enhance its professional aspect. You may download some free video editing software, but it is advisable to choose professional editing software such as Final Cut Pro, Microsoft Movie Maker, or Apple iMovie.   

Quick Tips

The following tips help you do a quick check when you create a video resume afresh.

  • Limit length: Your talking should be concise and less than three minutes.
  • Pleasant attire: Besides listening to you, the viewers also analyze you from your clothing. So follow a formal dressing etiquette as you would for an offline interview.
  • Emphasize requirements: Know your employer’s needs and prepare a speech that addresses them.
  • One-way channel: Remember, unlike live interviews, it’s not an interactive scenario. So your statements should be embedded answers to hidden questions the recruiter might expect.  
  • Check the quality: You should monitor the video, especially its acoustics, for pronunciation, pace, and noise disturbances.  


The new-generation students are well versed in designing and showcasing their online profiles. It is motivating candidates seeking jobs, including those in internships. Creating a video resume is a rising trend, even though it is yet to be a norm.
